The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language proficiency test specifically designed for healthcare professionals. It assesses the English language skills of healthcare professionals who wish to work or study in an English-speaking healthcare environment.
The OET exam evaluates four language skills:
Listening: This section assesses the ability to understand spoken English in healthcare settings. Candidates listen to recordings of healthcare-related conversations and answer multiple-choice questions or complete summaries or notes.
Reading: This section tests the ability to understand and comprehend written English texts commonly found in healthcare settings. Candidates read a variety of healthcare-related texts and answer multiple-choice questions, fill in the blanks or match information.
Writing: This section assesses the ability to communicate effectively in written English within a healthcare context. Candidates are required to write a letter or a report based on a given case or scenario, demonstrating their ability to organise information, convey ideas clearly and use appropriate language.
Speaking: This section evaluates the ability to communicate verbally in English within a healthcare context. Candidates engage in role-plays with an interlocutor, simulating typical healthcare scenarios such as taking a patient history or conducting a consultation.
The content of the OET exam is tailored to different healthcare professions including medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, veterinary science and more. Each profession has specific tasks and scenarios relevant to that field.
OET is recognized and accepted by regulatory healthcare bodies, universities and employers in various English-speaking countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
